Licence

What KafkIO's free licence lets you do and not do, third-party components, what "Donationware" means, and where to find the full licence.

KafkIO is free to use, at home and at work, under an End User License Agreement (EULA). It is free but not open source. This page sums up what the licence means in practice and where to find it; the full licence text is what actually applies, so read it if anything here matters to you.

What you can do

  • Install and use KafkIO for free, on your own or your organisation's computers, for personal and commercial work. There is no paid edition, trial period, licence key or account.
  • Give copies to others, as long as you pass on the complete, unmodified download with the licence included, don't charge for it, and don't suggest it comes from or is endorsed by anyone but its developer.

What you can't do

  • Modify KafkIO or build your own version of it.
  • Reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble it.
  • Sell, rent, lease or sublicense it, or otherwise make money from distributing it.
  • Remove or change its copyright notices or trademarks.

If you break these terms, the licence ends and you must stop using KafkIO and delete your copies.

Other terms worth knowing

  • No warranty. KafkIO is provided "as is". As with any tool that can change or delete topics, offsets and schemas, check what you're about to do on a production cluster.
  • Updates come under the same licence unless a new version says otherwise.
  • Ownership. KafkIO belongs to CMR Technologies Limited, the licensor; the licence gives you the right to use it, not ownership of it.
  • Governing law is Irish law.

Third-party components

KafkIO is built with open-source libraries (the Apache Kafka client among them) that have their own licences, such as Apache, MIT, BSD or LGPL. Those licences apply to those components, and nothing in KafkIO's licence limits the rights they give you.

"Donationware"

The splash screen and the empty workspace say License: this version of KafkIO is Donationware. This means KafkIO is funded by donations: making one is entirely optional and doesn't change what the licence allows. Supporting KafkIO has the ways to donate.

Finding the licence

  • In KafkIO: Help ▸ About KafkIO, then EULA license. KafkIO opens a copy of the licence text in your system's default application for text files (About KafkIO shows the dialog).
  • With the download: a copy, LICENSE.txt, comes with KafkIO, and the macOS installers show it before installing.
  • On this website: www.kafkio.com/license.
