Keyboard Shortcuts

Every keyboard shortcut in KafkIO: application and panel keys, dialogs, the cluster list, tables and text fields.

KafkIO is mostly driven with the mouse, but a handful of keys save trips to the menus and dialogs. This page lists every one, by where it works. On macOS, use ⌘ where this page says Ctrl, and ⌥ (Option) where it says Alt. Shortcuts are fixed: there's no setting to change them.

Application

These work anywhere in the main window. Menu items show their shortcut beside them:

KafkIO's View menu open, listing Health Log with Alt+3, Kafka Clusters with Alt+4 and Compact Tables
The View menu, with the shortcuts for the two side panels beside their items.
ShortcutActionMenu
Alt+3Show or hide the Health Log panelView ▸ Health Log
Alt+4Show or hide the Kafka Clusters panel, to give the cluster tabs the full widthView ▸ Kafka Clusters
F1Open the online help (see Getting Help)Help ▸ Online help
Ctrl+QQuit KafkIOFile ▸ Quit

Hiding both panels leaves a You can get them back here! pointer at the View menu. There's no shortcut for closing a cluster tab: use the × on the tab.

Dialogs

ShortcutAction
EscClose the dialog without doing anything (the same as Close or Cancel)
Ctrl+EnterRun the dialog's main action from anywhere in it, for example Save in Cluster Properties and Preferences
EnterPress the focused button. In a confirmation, the highlighted button (such as Disconnect or Delete) has the focus, so Enter confirms
Tab / Shift+TabMove to the next / previous field

Ctrl+Enter only works in dialogs whose main button sits in the button bar at the bottom. Where the action button is part of the form, as in Create Topic and Produce Message(s), it does nothing: click the button.

Warning: Esc closes the whole dialog even while one of its drop-down lists or the colour picker is open, and anything you typed is lost. To close just the list, click elsewhere in the dialog. A few windows, such as Topic Setting Update, don't respond to Esc at all.

Cluster list and tabs

WhereShortcutAction
Kafka Clusters list↑ / ↓Select the previous / next cluster or section
Kafka Clusters list, on a cluster→Connect (see Connecting and disconnecting)
Kafka Clusters list, on a cluster←Disconnect, after a confirmation
Topic Messages tabEnterRun the search, from anywhere on the tab (see Searching Messages)
Message Key, Message and Raw tabsEnter or ↓ / ↑ in the search boxNext / previous match (see Searching within a message)
Overview's cluster configuration searchEnter in the search boxNext match (see Cluster Overview)

Tables and lists

ShortcutAction
↑ / ↓Move the selection
Ctrl+click, Shift+clickAdd a row to the selection / select a range, in tables that allow several rows (ACLs, for example)
Ctrl+ASelect every listed row, in those same tables
Ctrl+CIn the Event Log: copy the selected entries
↑ / ↓ on a number spinnerIncrease / decrease the value

In other tables, Ctrl+C doesn't copy the selected row. Right-click it instead: the menu has Copy (the value you clicked) and a summary of the row or of every listed row.

Text fields

Text fields, filters and the code editors (message values, schemas, connector configuration, the KSQL editor) accept the usual editing keys of your operating system:

ShortcutAction
Ctrl+ASelect all
Ctrl+X / Ctrl+C / Ctrl+VCut / copy / paste
Ctrl+ZUndo
Ctrl+Y (Windows), Ctrl+Shift+Z (Linux), ⌘+Shift+Z (macOS)Redo
EscIn the main window: clear the field (a filter, the Messages tab's Text filter, a search box). In a dialog, Esc closes the dialog instead

Clearing a filter with Esc shows the whole list again straight away, which is handy after filtering the topics list.
